How has TikTok changed the industry?

If I told you that most of the artists and songs I presented I discovered from TikTok, would that surprise you?

Early into quarantine in 2020, I rediscovered my love for music. With so much time on my hands, I really got into finding songs that spoke to me. That was my “golden age” of music: every song I listened to gave me goosebumps. Still to this day, if I put on a song from that time period in my life, I am taken right back to online school in the Spring.

Most younger musicians today rely on TikTok to get their names out there. Bigger artists are encouraged to follow a formula that gets their song trending on the app, which inevitably means it will be trending on the charts. The platform is oversaturated with catchy clips of major hits that millions of people use but only know 20-30 seconds of.

Artists present their music with a trend, a lyric video, an introduction video, or just by trying to make it fit the standard popular sound.
